(Letters to the Ashram, 1937)

Where there is fear, there is no religion.

As soon as we lose the moral basis, we cease to be religious. Religion cannot overthrow and supplant morality.

-----------------------------------

I wish the silent masses of our country to be healthy and happy, and I wish them to evolve spiritually.

-----------------------------------

I am not a visionary. I claim to be a practical idealist. The religion of non-violence is not reserved for rishis and saints. It is also intended for the average man.

-----------------------------------

Religions are like different roads converging towards the same point. It doesn't matter if we take different paths, as long as we achieve the same goal.

I don't think there can be a single religion on earth. But if a man reaches the heart of his own religion, he also reaches the heart of other religions. (All men are brothers)

-----------------------------------

I do not believe that an isolated individual can rise spiritually and that those around him do not benefit from it. If, therefore, a single man takes a step forward in the spiritual life, all humanity benefits. On the contrary, the regression of a single step makes the whole world take a step back.

-----------------------------------

The level of evolution of a people is recognized by the way they treat their animals.

-----------------------------------

No matter how insignificant what you have to do. Do it as well as you can.

-----------------------------------

Our contribution to the progress of the world must be to put our own house in order.

-----------------------------------

Whether we have to obey all laws, good or bad, is a recent invention.

-----------------------------------

No man who loves his country can help it to progress if he dares to neglect any of his compatriots.

-----------------------------------

A law must first and foremost be a fair law. Modern politics makes the law a fetish simply because it is the law.

-----------------------------------

You must not lose hope in humanity. Humanity is an ocean: even if a few drops are contaminated, the ocean does not become so.

You must be the change you want to see in this world.

-----------------------------------

The only tyrant I accept in this world is the calm inner voice.

-----------------------------------

A human being is only the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.

-----------------------------------

The difference between the possible and the impossible is in the determination.

-----------------------------------

Start by changing in yourself what you want to change around you.

-----------------------------------

The greatest traveller is not the one who has been around the world ten times, but the one who has been around himself once.

-----------------------------------

To progress, we must not repeat the story, but produce a new one. We must add to the legacy of our ancestors.

-----------------------------------

As human beings, our greatness lies less in the ability to remake the world than in the ability to remake ourselves.

-----------------------------------

The difference between what we do and what we are able to do would be enough to solve a large part of the world's problems.

-----------------------------------

Your beliefs generate your thoughts, your thoughts generate your words, your words generate your actions, your actions generate your habits, your habits generate your values and your values generate your destiny.

-----------------------------------

In our efforts to move forward, we may be mistaken, sometimes even heavily so. But man is a being who must direct himself; this autonomy implies the power to make mistakes and to correct them as often as one makes them.

-----------------------------------

Man often becomes what he thinks he is. If I keep telling myself that I can't do a certain thing, it's possible that I'll end up being really unable to do it. On the contrary, if I am convinced that I can do it, I will surely acquire the ability to do it, even if I cannot have it from the beginning.

-----------------------------------

Truth nourishes the soul, lies gnaws at it.

-----------------------------------

The weapons of truth and love are invincible.

-----------------------------------

Our life is a long and painful quest for the Truth.

-----------------------------------

What is true for one person may be wrong for the other.

-----------------------------------

Even if you are a minority of one man, the truth is the truth.

-----------------------------------

Truth cannot be reached by one who does not have an abundant sense of humility in himself.

-----------------------------------

Everyone is right from their own point of view, but it is not impossible that everyone is wrong. (Letters to the Ashram, 1937)

-----------------------------------

The truth is as hard as a diamond and as fragile as a peach blossom. (Autobiography or my experiences of truth, 1929)

-----------------------------------

My demand for truth has itself taught me the beauty of compromise. (Autobiography or my experiences of truth, 1929)

-----------------------------------

By its very nature, truth carries the evidence in itself. As soon as it is rid of the cobwebs of ignorance, it shines brightly.

-----------------------------------

The seemingly different truths are like countless leaves that look different and are on the same tree. (Letters to the Ashram, 1948)

-----------------------------------

Error does not become truth because it spreads and multiplies; truth does not become error because no one sees it. (All men are brothers)

-----------------------------------

Constant development is the law of life, and a man who always tries to maintain his dogmas to appear consistent, leads himself to a false position.

-----------------------------------

The golden rule of conduct is mutual tolerance, because we will never all think the same way, we will only see part of the truth and from different angles. (All men are brothers, 1969)

-----------------------------------

Conscience is not the same for everyone. It is a good guide for individual conduct, but if we wanted to impose this conduct on everyone, it would be an intolerable encroachment on everyone's freedom of conscience.

-----------------------------------

There can be no inner peace without true knowledge. Once we know how to apply this infallible criterion of truth, we can immediately discern what is worth doing, or being seen, or being read. (Letters to the Ashram)

-----------------------------------

When I despair, I remember that throughout history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a while they may seem invincible, but in the end they always collapse. Always think about it.

-----------------------------------

Life persists within the very heart of destruction.

-----------------------------------

We have better things to do with life than to accelerate its pace.

-----------------------------------

Purity of life is the most authentic and highest art form.

-----------------------------------

Freedom has no value if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

-----------------------------------

The machine has won the man, the man has become a machine, works and no longer lives.

I don't want my house to be walled up on all sides, nor my windows blocked, but I want the breeze that the cultures of all countries bring me to move freely.

-----------------------------------

A short text by Gandhi on love:
Take your smile, and give it to the one who never had one.
Take a ray of sunshine, and let him pierce the darkness.
Discover a source, and purify the one who is in the mud.
Take a tear, and put it on the face of the one who can't cry.
Take courage, and put it in the heart of the one who can no longer fight.
Discover a meaning to life, and share it with the one who no longer knows where he is going.
Take hope in your hands, and live in the light of its rays.
Take kindness, and give it to the one who can't give.
Discover love, and make it known to all.

-----------------------------------

Short text by Gandhi on peace:
If you want peace in the world, you need peace in your country.
If you want peace in your country, you need peace in your region.
If you want peace in your region, you need peace in your city.
If you want peace in your city, you need peace in your street.
If you want peace on your street, you need peace in your house.
If you want peace in your house, you need peace in your heart.

-----------------------------------

I make no distinction between the different races, for me a man is always a man.

-----------------------------------

Non-violence does not consist in "refraining from any real struggle in the face of wickedness". On the contrary, I see non-violence as a more energetic and authentic form of struggle.

-----------------------------------

Clemency is the prerogative of the strong.

-----------------------------------

I never understood how people could feel honored to see a human brother humiliate himself in front of them.

-----------------------------------

I am slow to see the shortcomings of my fellow human beings, probably because I myself have too many of them, and as such, I need the charity of others. I have learned not to judge anyone severely and to distinguish between the defects that I sometimes notice.

-----------------------------------

Good and evil are relative terms. What is good in some conditions can become an evil or a sin in other circumstances.

-----------------------------------

Whenever there is discord, when you encounter opposition, try to defeat the opponent with love.

-----------------------------------

Man is master of his destiny in the sense that he is free to choose how to use his freedom. But he has no control over the consequences of his decision. As soon as he starts to believe that he has some control, he goes straight to failure.

-----------------------------------

It is in silence that the soul finds the way to the light, and what is elusive or misleading is revealed in crystal clarity. Our life is a long and arduous quest for truth, and the soul needs inner rest to fully realize itself.

-----------------------------------

The smallest of actions will always be better than the greatest of intentions.

-----------------------------------

Truth requires constant and large-scale demonstration. That is what I am currently trying to do as best I can. But what can be the result of my greatest efforts if they remain minimal? After all, don't I live blissfully in an illusory universe? Why, then, should I ask that I be followed in such futile research? These are all very relevant questions. My answer is quite simple. Everyone should listen to their inner voice and act accordingly; and if you don't have ears to listen, all you have to do is do your best. Under no circumstances should we imitate others like sheep.

-----------------------------------

I would probably be a Christian, if Christians were twenty-four hours a day.

-----------------------------------

The one who is completely immersed in God, relies on Him, without worrying about failures or successes; he offers Him everything. As I have not yet achieved this was, I deduce that my efforts are insufficient. (p. 111)

-----------------------------------

The victory obtained by violence is equivalent to a defeat, because it is momentary.

-----------------------------------

Live as if you have to die tomorrow. Learn as if you have to live forever.

-----------------------------------

It is in silence that the soul finds the way to the light, and what is elusive or misleading is revealed in crystal clarity. Our life is a long and arduous quest for truth, and the soul needs inner rest to fully realize itself.

-----------------------------------

The spirit sleeps in the brute who knows for any law only that of physical force. The dignity of man requires obeying a law superior to the strength of the mind

-----------------------------------

The end is in the means, as the tree is in the seed.

-----------------------------------

In Hinduism, the incarnation applies to those who have performed an extraordinary and extraordinary action for the good of humanity. All incarnate life is actually a divine incarnation, but it is not usual to consider each human being as a divine incarnation. (...) There is an Urdu truth that says: "Adam is not God, but a spark of the Divine". And that is why the one who is the most deeply religious, behaves as if penetrated by the divine spark. (...) This belief in incarnation is a testimony to the highest spiritual ambition. Man is not at peace with himself until he has become like God. The effort to reach this state is supreme, it is the only ambition worthy of being so. And it is the realization of the Self. (...) This unparalleled remedy[the way to self-realization] is the renunciation of the fruits of action (...) by dedicating all one's actions to God - that is, by abandoning oneself totally to Him, body and soul. (...) The Gita said: "Do the work that is due to you, but renounce its fruit. Be detached and act. Have no desire for reward and work!

-----------------------------------

My wish, as well as that of some of my companions, has been to present in an accessible way the practice of teaching the Gita as I had understood it (...) This translation is intended for women, the working class, the so-called Shudra[the lowest of the four castes], and others, who are illiterate or even without intellectual background, who have neither the time nor the desire to read the Gita in the original text and who, despite this, need its support.

-----------------------------------

No matter how insignificant what you have to do. Do it as well as you can. Take as much care and attention as you think is most important. Because you will be judged on these little things.

-----------------------------------

When I refuse to do something that repels my conscience, I appeal to the strength of the soul, which implies self-sacrifice.

-----------------------------------

You don't necessarily have to be silent because you keep your mouth shut.

-----------------------------------

The silent man is the one who, having the possibility to speak, never says one word too many.

-----------------------------------

Non-violence is the greatest force that humanity has at its disposal. It is more powerful than the most destructive weapon invented by man.

-----------------------------------

Whether they are temples, mosques or churches, I make no distinction between these different dwellings of God. They are what faith has made them, an answer to those who wish to reach the Invisible.

-----------------------------------

I am wary of those who proclaim their faith to others, especially when they have in mind to convert them. Faith is not made to be talked about, but to be lived. So, by itself, it spreads.

-----------------------------------

Non-violence is not a monastic virtue intended to provide inner peace and guarantee individual salvation. But it is a necessary rule of conduct to live in society.

-----------------------------------

I don't think that one day there will be only one religion on earth. This encourages me to do everything possible to discover a common denominator between the different religions and thus to foster a climate of tolerance among all.

-----------------------------------

If I were sure I would find God in a cave in the Himalayas, I would go there right away. But I know that He is nowhere else but in the heart of humanity.

-----------------------------------

The first requirement of non-violence is to respect justice all around you and in all areas.

-----------------------------------

The instruments necessary for the search for truth are as simple as they are complex. The arrogant may find them perfectly impracticable; like the innocent child, perfectly practicable.

-----------------------------------

There are areas where reason can hardly enlighten us and where we must rely on faith to continue our journey. In this case, then, faith does not contradict reason, but exceeds it.

-----------------------------------

Some argue that our food does not affect the soul in any way, since it does not drink or eat; what matters does not come from the outside but comes out of our heart. This argument, no doubt, is not lacking in strength. But rather than dwell on discussing its value, I will simply state my firm conviction in this area: reducing the quality and quantity of his diet is as necessary as controlling his thoughts and keeping his tongue, if we want to live in this fear of God that will one day lead us to see Him face to face.

-----------------------------------

I mean, for fear of burning everything, I didn't press hard enough. The neck was really hard, but the starch that was too much began to melt drop by drop. I made the joy of my colleagues when I arrived at the courtroom in this way, but even then I knew I was impervious to ridicule.

-----------------------------------

In the same way, I learned to do without the services of the hairdresser just as I had been able to free myself from the launderer. When you go to England, you at least learn the art of shaving, but not the art of cutting your own hair.

-----------------------------------

This answer did not surprise my interlocutors. They knew that the hairdresser, by refusing to cut my hair, was within his rights. Otherwise, by accepting blacks, he would certainly have lost his customers.

-----------------------------------

Man and his actions are two distinct things. While it is appropriate to approve a good deed and to disapprove a bad one, it is always necessary, as the case may be, to respect or pity the perpetrator of that deed. "You must hate sin but not the sinner." This is a precept that is quite easy to understand but difficult to put into practice. That is why hatred spreads its poison throughout the world. ahimsâ is the foundation of this research.

-----------------------------------

And what value could a testimony before a court, about certain events in my life, have that would be impartial but that would sin by omission? If he were to envy an inquisitive mind to submit me to a counter-test on the accuracy of the previous pages, it is likely that he would bring more light to it; and if a hostile intention guided him in this search, he would perhaps succeed in spreading in the eyes of all "the vanity of my claims".

-----------------------------------

I think that this masterful book revealed to me what my deepest convictions were; this explains my enthusiasm for this work, and the transformations it brought to my life. The poet's mission is to revive the good that lies dormant in the depths of each man's heart; and if his influence is not the same on each of us, it is because everything depends on our degree of personal evolution

-----------------------------------

Once I arrived at the scene of the battle, I realized that there was nothing to speak of as "revolt"; it was impossible to observe any resistance. A simple news item was highlighted: a Zulu chief, followed by his tribe, refused to submit to a new tax and pierced the collector with a paddle. Anyway, I was in love with the Zulus. So it will be my joy when I arrived at headquarters and learned that our main task would be to treat the wounded Zulus. Because, explained the chief doctor, the whites were reluctant to take care of the Zulus. Without care, the wounds worsened and the situation became catastrophic.

I do not claim to consider these experiences as a model of perfection.

-----------------------------------

The goal I have been striving to achieve, at any cost, for the past thirty years or so, is what moksha says. 1] It is self-accomplishment, and God's vision face to face. To this end I tend with all my being, through my life and my actions. Everything converges there: my words, my writings and what I am doing in the political field. However, I have always been convinced of this, which one of us can do, the others can do. That is why, far from acting in secret, I undertook my experiences in full view of everyone; which, I think, does not take anything away from their spiritual value. Of course, we cannot account for certain things that are known only to ourselves and to our Creator. This is not the case with the experiences I will now report. They concern the spiritual life, or rather the morality, which is the essence of religion.

-----------------------------------

I have no intention of undertaking a real autobiography here. I would simply like to tell the story of my many experiences with the truth; and as they merge with my life, it is true that this story will take the form of an autobiography. But it is deliberate if the following pages only relate to these experiences.

-----------------------------------

My experiences in the political field are now known not only in India but also, to some extent, in the "civilized" world. In my opinion, they are not of great value. And because of this, I grant even less to the title they gave me: Mahatma. Often I deeply regretted that I was called that; and I don't remember a single moment when I could say that it flattered me. On the other hand, it is with great joy that I will talk about my spiritual experiences. I am the only one who knows them and it is from them that the energy that drives me in political action has come to me. There is no reason to boast of these experiences as they are truly spiritual in nature. They can only add to my humility; for the more I meditate on my past, the clearer I see my limits.

-----------------------------------

It is better to put your heart into prayer without finding words than to find words without putting your heart into them

-----------------------------------

The hymn of hatred does not benefit humanity.

-----------------------------------

Non-cooperation with evil is as much a duty as cooperation with good.

-----------------------------------

It is a virtue to have disaffection for a government that as a whole has done more harm to India than any other previous system.

-----------------------------------

The condition cannot be manufactured or regulated by law. If one has no affection for a person or a system, one must be free to express fully one's disaffection, as long as one does not intend to use, promote or incite violence.

-----------------------------------

The victory obtained by violence is equivalent to a defeat, because it is momentary.

-----------------------------------

Love is the most powerful force in the world and yet it is the most humble force imaginable.

-----------------------------------

Regardless of the nobility of a cause to be defended, hatred and violence compromise the peace we seek and increase hatred and violence.

-----------------------------------

Everyone should listen to their inner voice and act accordingly; and if you don't have ears to listen, all you have to do is do your best. Under no circumstances should you imitate others like a sheep

-----------------------------------

To be effective, non-violence requires a strong willingness to accept suffering. It is by no means a servile submission to the tyrant's will but to oppose his misdeeds with all his soul

-----------------------------------

Clemency is much more noble than punishment. Forgiveness is the warrior's adornment. But the absence of violence only means clemency if there is a possibility of punishment.

-----------------------------------

Non-violence cannot be taught to those who fear death and lack the energy to resist.

-----------------------------------

Non-violence and cowardice are mutually exclusive.

-----------------------------------

You can't be really non-violent and passive in the face of social injustices

-----------------------------------

I do not believe in the conversion of one person by another. I must strive never to undermine my neighbour's faith; on the contrary, I must allow him to deepen his own. This attitude presupposes that we believe in the truth of all religions and that we have respect for them. For this to happen, it is necessary to be truly humble and to admit the fact that all religions benefit from divine light but through the screen of our carnal condition, which reflects their more or less great inadequacies.

-----------------------------------

True "non-violence" should mean that man is totally free from his bad will, anger and hatred, in order to give way to an overflowing love for all beings.

-----------------------------------

Religions are like different roads converging towards the same point. It doesn't matter if we take different routes, as long as we achieve the same goal.

-----------------------------------

I would probably be a Christian if Christians were twenty-four hours a day.

-----------------------------------

What is action? What is inaction? - the Wise Men themselves are uncertain. So I will explain to you what action is, this knowledge will free you from all evil.

-----------------------------------

"I will explain to you what right action is and, having understood it, you will save yourself from evil, from the round of births and deaths. »

-----------------------------------

Gandhi: Our eyes are closed with blindfolds, like those of the ox under the yoke turning in the oil press. This blindfold is not eternal, but we keep it because we have grown up with it and see it as a natural thing, as fear, which for us is a natural thing. There was a young lion cub who had grown up among the sheep and he was trembling with fear just like them. One day, a real lion appeared before him and put a mirror in front of his eyes. The lion cub started roaring and left the sheep herd on the spot. No one had forced him to wear a blindfold[that of ignorance] over his eyes, it had just come of its own accord.

-----------------------------------

In the same way, each of us wears the blindfold of ignorance over our eyes, and we do not know that it is not our dharma to live in ignorance, to submit ourselves to the round of births and deaths. Our dharma is to rise ever higher, until we cannot go higher. We will not rest until we reach the goal. Eternal peace will only come once the goal has been achieved, that is, the peace of liberation. If you are at the top of the Himalayas, you are sure to fall from it, because one day or another the summit will collapse. It will collapse because it is also subject to change. In the moksha state, there is no more change and no more falls.

-----------------------------------

Moksha means the destruction of the cycle of births and deaths, i.e. the exit of this cycle. It means deliverance from suffering. If we meet a worthy guru, and he loosens the blindfold and places the mirror of knowledge in front of us, then we will know who we are, whether we should continue to go from birth to death or whether we are destined for something else. In truth, we are destined to be much better than always being dragged into this round. We belong to a higher plane. So we will be ready for this freedom when the darkness of ignorance has disappeared.

-----------------------------------

Non-violence ensures respect for human dignity and makes it possible to advance the cause of peace, in accordance with the most cherished wishes of humanity.

-----------------------------------

My religion does not know any exclusive ones: the least of the creatures has its place in them. It does not tolerate contempt or segregation, whether on the basis of race, religion or colour.

-----------------------------------

I have not seen God and do not know him. I have made my own the faith that the world has in Him. It is so deeply rooted in me that it seems to me as certain as a direct experience.

-----------------------------------

With regard to children's curiosity about the facts of life, we should explain them if we can, or confess our ignorance if we cannot. We must never give them false pretexts. They know more than we think they do.

-----------------------------------

Most of the time, it is better to keep quiet about the good a man does. The imitation of the model is the most sincere flattery.

-----------------------------------

Let us not confuse what is natural with what is usual.

-----------------------------------

Believing in something and not living it is dishonest.

-----------------------------------

When I meet people from different parts of the world, I inevitably see that we are all basically the same: we are all human beings. We can be dressed differently, have a different skin colour, speak different languages. So much for appearances. But fundamentally, we are all the same human beings. This is what binds us together, what allows us to understand each other, to become friends, to feel close to each other. Dalai Lama

-----------------------------------

At first I found time to be useful in a small hospital, at two hours in the morning counting the trips to and from there. This work made me feel a little more comfortable. I would ask patients what they were complaining about and then forward these instructions to the doctor and ensure that the prescriptions were filled. It brought me closer to all those Indians who were suffering. Most of them were Tamils, Telugus or North Indians, who worked under contract. I gained experience that was very useful to me during the Boer War, when I provided my services to heal wounded and sick soldiers.

-----------------------------------

I am convinced that to raise your children properly, you have to know how to care for a baby. On several occasions, I have seen the advantages of carefully studying all these issues. If I had neglected this point and not been able to use my knowledge, my children would not enjoy such good health today. We are victims of a kind of superstition that makes us believe that the child has nothing to learn for the first five years of his life. The opposite is true, because after that, the child will never have the opportunity to learn the lessons we learn in the first five years. His education begins the very day of his conception

Whoever wants to swim in the ocean of truth, must reduce himself to zero.

Life persists within the very heart of destruction.

The toughest fiber must soften in the fire of love. If it doesn't melt, it's because the fire isn't strong enough

-----------------------------------

Fasting is only one way to control yourself.
It is not enough to have your body fast.
You must also submit your mind to it

-----------------------------------

Whenever you are in doubt, do the following test: remember the poorest and weakest person you have ever met in your life and ask yourself if what you are about to do will be of any use to them.

The end is worth what the means are worth.

-----------------------------------

The rich should take the initiative to strip themselves of everything in order to spread the spirit of contentment.

-----------------------------------

The mind slumbers in the brute and that is why it only knows the law of physical force. The dignity of man requires obedience to a higher law, to the strength of the spirit.

I have no intention of undertaking a real autobiography here. I would simply like to tell the story of my many experiences with the truth; and as they merge with my life, it is true that this story will take the form of an autobiography.

-----------------------------------

The wise man only retains what is good about everything and rejects what is bad.

-----------------------------------

Our reward is in the effort and not in the result.

-----------------------------------

Life only dispenses all its gifts on the day when one is initiated into the art of living nobly.

-----------------------------------

Man is a social being. If he has no relationship with society, he can neither become aware of his unity with the universe nor deprive himself of his selfishness. It is his social interdependence that allows him to test his faith and to measure himself against the touchstone of reality.

-----------------------------------

To strengthen the armor, fasting is as necessary as depriving yourself of certain foods. The senses are so tyrannical that they can only be perfectly controlled if they are surrounded by fences on all sides.

-----------------------------------

If thought is not controlled, the rest goes to drift. (...) Everything is only child's play when you hold the reins of your mind.

-----------------------------------

You don't necessarily have to be silent because you keep your mouth shut. We may have been cut off our tongues without knowing the true silence. The silent man is the one who, having the possibility to speak, never says one word too many.

-----------------------------------

Experience has shown me (...) that silence is part of the discipline that must be imposed on those who have vowed to serve the truth. Man is naturally inclined to exaggerate, distort or conceal facts, even without his knowledge. Silence is necessary to overcome these weaknesses. The words of a stingy man in words are rarely meaningless. Every word, in this case, carries.

-----------------------------------

Civilization, in the true sense of the word, does not consist in multiplying needs, but in voluntarily limiting them. It is the only way to experience true happiness and make ourselves more available to others

-----------------------------------

You can never predict the results of an action. But if you do nothing, there will be no result.

-----------------------------------

Do not follow the path of others. Go instead where there is no path and draw a trail.

-----------------------------------

We become strong by preserving or sublimating the energy that created life. We continually and even unconsciously waste this energy by feeding confused and unwanted thoughts.

-----------------------------------

If we want to become non-violent, we must wish to have nothing more on earth than the smallest in the world.

-----------------------------------

I don't like the word tolerance, but I can't think of a better word.

-----------------------------------

Humility should make the one who possesses it understand that he is nothing. As soon as you imagine you're something, there's selfishness. If those who observe rules are proud of them, the rules will lose much of their value, if not all of them.... To feel that we are something is to build a barrier between God and ourselves. To stop feeling that we are something is to become one with God. A drop of water in the ocean has its share of the immensity of the whole, although it is not aware of it. But it evaporates as soon as it enters a life independent of that of the ocean. We are not exaggerating when we say that life on earth is only a bubble.

-----------------------------------

I am full of admiration for Western science; but I am outraged to see scientists mistreating other creatures. Vivisection inspires me with an unnamed horror.

-----------------------------------

I consider this massacre of innocent lives, allegedly perpetrated in the name of science and in the interest of humanity, to be unforgivable. I deny any value to scientific discoveries soiled by innocent blood.

-----------------------------------

Humanity could very well have discovered the theory of blood circulation without vivisection. But I see the day coming when the honest scientist will be reluctant to use such research methods

-----------------------------------

Man is master of his destiny in the sense that he is free to choose how to use his freedom. But he has no control over the consequences of his decision. As soon as he starts to believe that he has some control, he goes straight to failure.

-----------------------------------

I oppose violence because when it seems to produce good, the resulting good is only transitory, while the evil produced is permanent.

-----------------------------------

It is a mistake to believe necessarily wrong what you do not understand.

-----------------------------------

No human being is too bad to be saved. No human being is perfect enough to have the right to kill anyone he wrongly considers to be entirely evil.

-----------------------------------

You are the one who will change what you want to change in the world.

-----------------------------------

Everyone must have at least enough to support themselves.

-----------------------------------

True strength is not of physical origin. It comes from an indomitable will.

-----------------------------------

I can't fence all four sides of my house or wall my windows. I want the spirit of all cultures to blow through me as freely as possible.

-----------------------------------

God is the greatest democrat the world has ever known, because to better let us choose between good and evil, he does not exert the slightest pressure on our freedom.

-----------------------------------

The whole world is like the human body with its members. Pain felt in one limb is felt throughout the body. If one part starts to rot, the whole system will inevitably be poisoned.

-----------------------------------

You can only beat your opponent through love and not through hatred.

-----------------------------------

When the war broke out between the English and the Boers, my sympathy went to the latter. But then I thought I had no right, in such circumstances, to take my personal convictions into account.

-----------------------------------

There is no example of a desire of the heart, if it is pure in its impatience, not being fulfilled. My own experience has often allowed me to verify this rule. Serving the poor is what my heart has desired, and I have always found myself mingled with the poor and able to identify with them

-----------------------------------

The golden rule of conduct is mutual tolerance, because we will never all think the same way, we will only see part of the truth and from different angles.

-----------------------------------

As soon as someone understands that it is contrary to his human dignity to obey unjust laws, no tyranny can enslave him.

-----------------------------------

The true democrat is the one who, through purely non-violent means, defends his freedom, consequently that of his country and ultimately that of all humanity.

-----------------------------------

All men are brothers.

The true democrat is the one who, through purely non-violent means, defends his freedom, consequently that of his country and ultimately that of all humanity.

-----------------------------------

After nearly thirty-five years of uninterrupted political activity, I feel from the bottom of my heart that the world is tired of watching bloodshed. He's looking for a way out....

-----------------------------------

Civil disobedience becomes a sacred duty when the state becomes outlawed, or, similarly, corrupt.

-----------------------------------

It was in Porbandar that my childhood was spent.
I remember being sent to school there.
My only memory of that time is that I learned, along with other boys, to call our master with all kinds of names - which would strongly suggest that my intelligence should be lazy, and my memory gross.

-----------------------------------

When what you think, what you say, what you do, are in harmony, happiness belongs to you

-----------------------------------

Be the change you want to see in the world.

-----------------------------------

The truth is that in India, the nation in general has used passive resistance in all areas of life. We no longer cooperate with the dominant powers when they do not meet our needs.

-----------------------------------

Believing in something and not living it is dishonest.

-----------------------------------

Truth never prejudices a just cause.

-----------------------------------

It is a mistake to believe that there is no connection between the end and the means, and this error has led men considered as believers to commit terrible crimes. It's like saying that by planting weeds you can harvest roses.

-----------------------------------

The strength of the number only replays the fearful. He who is brave in spirit makes himself glorious by fighting alone.

-----------------------------------

When it comes to choosing between freedom and scholarship, who can deny that one should prefer the former a thousand times over the latter?

-----------------------------------

My life forms an inseparable whole: the same mine unites all my actions. They all have their source in an unquenchable love for humanity

-----------------------------------

The economic system that despises moral values is unfair.

-----------------------------------

Male and female, each is complementary to the other.

-----------------------------------

The victory obtained by violence is equivalent to a defeat, because it is momentary.

-----------------------------------

The problem with lying is that you have to remember your lies.

-----------------------------------

There are times when you have to obey a call that is the highest of all that is the voice of conscience, even if such obedience can cost a bitter tear and even more, the separation of friends, family belong to everything you have held dear than life itself. For this reason, obedience is the law of our being.

-----------------------------------

The man must choose one of the two courses, the high or the low; but as he has the brute in him, he will choose the race down more easily than up, especially when the low course is presented to him under a beautiful dress. Man easily surrenders when sin is presented in the form of virtue.

-----------------------------------

A collection of quotes and teachings from Mahatma Gandhi

-----------------------------------

Knowledge comes spontaneously to a bhakta. He doesn't have to go through large volumes. But whoever believes that he will first acquire knowledge and cultivate bhakti will fail miserably in his goal. No one can acquire knowledge in this way. Such knowledge generates, if anything, pride. But he who lovingly cultivates devotion to the Lord and constantly thinks of Him obtains knowledge without any particular effort to this end.

-----------------------------------

But the desireless or renunciation does not come just to talk about it. It is not achieved by intellectual achievement. It can only be reached by constant heart loss. Good knowledge is necessary to achieve renunciation. Educated men have a knowledge of a kind. They can recite the Vedas from memory, but they can be immersed in indulgence. So that knowledge would not be unleashed, the author of the Bhagavad Gita insisted that devotion should accompany him and gave him first place. Knowledge without devotion will be like a failure. Therefore, says the Gita, "Devotion and knowledge will follow." Therefore, says the Gita, "will devotion and knowledge follow?

-----------------------------------

Forgetting how to dig the ground and stretch the ground is forgetting yourself.

-----------------------------------

Just as we must not receive, we must not possess anything that we do not really need. The possession of unnecessary food, clothing or furniture would constitute a violation of this principle. For example, you shouldn't keep a chair if you can do without it. By observing this principle, we lead to a progressive simplification of our own lives.

-----------------------------------

Individual freedom and interdependence are essential for living in society.

-----------------------------------

Satisfaction lies in effort, not in achievement. The complete effort is the complete victory.

-----------------------------------

It does not require money to be clean, clean and dignified.

-----------------------------------

Absolute calm is not the law of the ocean. And it's the same with the ocean of life.

-----------------------------------

The Awakened One told you never to forget the words that this short period of life is but a fleeting shadow, a fleeting thing, and if your Realize the nothingness of all that appears before your eyes, the nothingness of this material case that we see before we change, then indeed there are treasures for you at the top, and you are at peace here, the peace that transcends all understanding, and the happiness to which we are totally foreign. This requires incredible faith, divine faith and submission of everything we see before us.

-----------------------------------

The distinctive feature of modern civilization is an indefinite multiplicity of human needs. The characteristic of ancient civilization is an imperative restriction and strict regulation of these needs.

-----------------------------------

Life is greater than any art. I would go even further by stating that the man whose life is closest to perfection is the greatest artist; for what is art without the sure foundation and framework of a noble life?

-----------------------------------

Literacy must be one of the many means of intellectual development, but we have had illiterate intellectual giants in the past.

-----------------------------------

He alone can make a great resolution that has an indomitable faith in God and is afraid of God.

-----------------------------------

The friendship that insists on agreement on all issues is not worth the name. Friendship to be real must always bear the weight of honest difference, no matter how intense it may be.

-----------------------------------

Prayer is not an idle amusement of an old woman. Well understood and applied, it is the most powerful instrument of action.

-----------------------------------

Old as I am in age, I do not feel that I have stopped growing internally or that my growth will stop when my flesh dissolves.

-----------------------------------

I realize every day that the search for the truth is in vain unless it is based on love. To hurt a single human being is to hurt those divine powers within us, and evil does not only affect that human being but with him the whole world.

-----------------------------------

We must be the change we want to see in the world.

-----------------------------------

Let us fear God and stop fearing man.

-----------------------------------

When one is free to attach oneself to wealth, reputation, family, body and surrender to God, fearlessness will come of itself.

-----------------------------------

The only fear allowed is fear of God and fear of doing evil and that is really fear.

-----------------------------------

Boldness is essential to the acquisition of all other noble qualities. Truth, love and ahimsa will be absent without fearlessness.

-----------------------------------

Fear is possessed more often by the so-called physically weak, the poor, the less healthy and the less educated. It is a spiritual force. It is characteristic of the soul and not of the body.

-----------------------------------

God as truth has been for me a measure beyond price; May it be so for each of us.

-----------------------------------

Devotion to the truth is the only justification for our existence. But it is impossible for us to achieve a perfect Truth as long as we are imprisoned in this mortal framework. We can only visualize it in our imagination. We cannot, through the instrumentality of this ephemeral body, see the truth face to face, which is eternal. That is why, in the last resort, we must rely on faith.

-----------------------------------

There is a mysterious undefinable power that permeates everything. I feel it well that I don't see it. It is this invisible power that makes itself felt and defies all evidence, because it is so different from everything I perceive through my senses.

-----------------------------------

What joy it would be when people realize that religion does not consist in external ceremonial but an ever-increasing internal response to the highest impulses of which man is capable.

-----------------------------------

I can say without hesitation, and yet in all humility, that those who say that religion has nothing to do with politics do not know what religion means.

-----------------------------------

To give pleasure to one heart through one act is better than a thousand heads bending in prayer.

-----------------------------------

God has no religion.

-----------------------------------

When the mind has been completely cleansed, the body will be fine. There is a saying that if the mind is pure the Ganga flows to your door. In other words, if the mind is stable and sattvic, the body must become so.

-----------------------------------

Consciously or unconsciously, each of us does one thing or another. If we cultivate the habit of doing this service deliberately, our desire for service will become stronger and stronger, and this will contribute not only to our own happiness, but to that of the whole world.

-----------------------------------

The present means our duty for the moment. If we put all our efforts into doing our duty, as we know at this time, we will have made the greatest human effort. Grief is born from the dream of the future and the past. Thus, the one who cares about the present and does his duty has neither birth nor death.

-----------------------------------

In the attitude of silence, the soul finds the way in a clearer light, and what is elusive and misleading is resolved in crystalline clarity.

-----------------------------------

Silence of sewn lips is not silence. The same result can be achieved by cutting off the tongue, but it is not silence either. He is silent, who, having the ability to speak, says nothing.

-----------------------------------

As long as the mind has not changed, the form can be changed. Form is only an expression of the inner spirit. We can succeed in apparently modifying the form, but the alteration will only be a simple hypothesis if the inner spirit remains unalterable.

-----------------------------------

In the march towards the Truth, anger, selfishness, hatred, naturally give way, because otherwise the truth would be impossible to obtain. A man who is influenced by negative emotions may have good intentions, may be truthful in his words, but he will never find the truth.

-----------------------------------

I have nothing new to reach the world. Truth and non-violence are as old as the hills. All I did was try experiments on a large scale at once. In doing so, I have sometimes made mistakes and learned from my mistakes. Life and its problems have thus become for me so many experiences in the practice of truth and non-violence.

-----------------------------------

From bitter experience, I learned the supreme lesson: to keep my anger and, as the stored heat is transmuted into energy, our anger can be transformed into a power capable of moving the world.

-----------------------------------

Joy lies in the struggle, in the attempt, in the suffering involved, not in the victory itself.

-----------------------------------

I can easily endure the negation of the world, but any denial on my part from God is unthinkable. I know there's nothing I can do. God can do anything. O God, make yourself your instrument and use it as you wish!

-----------------------------------

I didn't see him, I didn't know him either. I have made the faith of the world in God and since my faith is indelible, I consider this faith as an experience. However, as can be said, to describe faith, as experience must tamper with truth, it may be more accurate to say that I have no word to describe my belief in God. However, I am more sure of its existence than of the fact that you and I are sitting in this room. Then I can also testify that I can live without air and water, but not without him. You can tear out my eyes, but it can't kill me. You can cut my nose, but it's not going to kill me. But believe my faith in God and I'm dead.

-----------------------------------

I believe that we can all become messengers of God if we stop fearing man and seek only the truth of God. I believe that I only seek the truth of God and that I have lost all fear of man... I have no special revelation of God's will. My firm conviction is that He reveals Himself every day to every human being, but we close our ears to the "still small voice". Some of my pen pals seem to think I can do wonders. Let me say as a devotee of the truth that I do not have such gifts. Everything I can get comes from God. But he doesn't work directly. He works through his countless agencies.

-----------------------------------

The word satya (Truth) is derived from Sat which means "to be". Nothing is or exists in reality, except the truth. This is why Sat (Truth) is perhaps God's most important name. Thinking more deeply, we will realize that Sat is the only correct and fully meaningful factual name for God.

-----------------------------------

And where there is truth, there is also knowledge that is true. Where there is no truth, there can be no true knowledge. That is why the word Chit (knowledge) is associated with the name of God. And where there is real knowledge, there is always happiness (Ananda). Devotion to this truth is the only justification for our existence.

-----------------------------------

All our activities must be focused on the truth. Generally speaking, observance of the law of truth is understood simply as meaning that we must speak the truth. But there must be truth in thought, truth in speech and truth in action. For the man who has realized this truth in its fullness, nothing remains to be known, because all the necessary knowledge is included.

-----------------------------------

The truth should be the very breath of our lives. Once this stage of the pilgrim's progress is reached, all the other rules of correct living will come effortlessly, and their obedience will be instinctive. Without truth, however, it is impossible to observe principles or rules in life.

-----------------------------------

The seeker after the truth should be more humble than dust.

-----------------------------------

The world crushes the dust under its feet, but the seeker after the Truth should humiliate himself so that even the dust could crush him. Only then, and not before, will he get a glimpse of the truth.

-----------------------------------

The instruments for the search for the truth are as simple as they are difficult. They may seem quite impossible to an arrogant person and quite possible to an innocent child.

-----------------------------------

The deeper the search in the truth mine, the richer the discovery of gems is.

-----------------------------------

Everything that appears and happens around and around is uncertain, transient. But there is a hidden Supreme Being as a certainty.

-----------------------------------

Love and exclusive possession can never go together.

-----------------------------------

While admitting that man really lives by habit, I believe that it is better to live by the exercise of his will.

-----------------------------------

It is only because we try to maintain the permanent character with the impermanent aspects of religious teachings that there are so many distortions in religious practice today.

-----------------------------------

A man can only exercise perfect love and be completely dispossessed if he is willing to embrace death and renounce his body for human service.

-----------------------------------

The whole truth goes through three stages. First of all, he's being ridiculed. Then he is violently opposed. Finally, it is accepted as a matter of course.

-----------------------------------

The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the prerogative of the fort.

-----------------------------------

It is much easier to conquer others than to conquer oneself, because the former can be reached by external means, while the latter can only be reached by one's own mind.

-----------------------------------

Experience has taught me that silence is part of the spiritual discipline of a truth practitioner. The predisposition to exaggerate, suppress or modify the truth, knowingly or unknowingly, is a natural weakness of man and silence is necessary to overcome it.

-----------------------------------

To call the woman the weaker sex is a libel; it is the injustice of the man to the woman. If by force we mean brute force, then women are less brute than men. If by force we mean moral power, then women are infinitely superior to men. Doesn't she have a greater intuition, isn't she more sacrificed, doesn't she have greater endurance capacities, doesn't she have more courage? Without it, man could not be. If non-violence is the law of our being, the future is with women. Who can make a more effective call to the heart than the woman?

-----------------------------------

The Gita is the universal mother. She's not hijacking anyone. Its door is wide open to anyone who knocks. A real Gita voter doesn't know what a disappointment it is...

-----------------------------------

When disappointment looks at the face and alone I don't see a ray of light, I go back to the Bhagavad Gita. I find a verse here and a verse, and I immediately start smiling in the midst of overwhelming tragedies - and my life has been filled with external tragedies - and if they have left no visible trace, I do not owe it. all to the teaching of the Bhagavad Gita.

-----------------------------------

Non-violence is total innocence. Total non-violence is the total absence of unwillingness against everything that lives. Non-violence is innocence in its active form, good will towards all life. It's pure love.

Don't be afraid. He who fears hates; he who hates kills. Break your sword and throw it away. Then fear will not touch you. I was delivered from fear and desire in such a way that I know the power of God.

-----------------------------------

We have both good and bad desires within us. It is our duty to cultivate the former and to remove or eradicate the latter.

-----------------------------------

The sincere and pure desire of the heart is always fulfilled.

-----------------------------------

Everyone ages with the passage of time, desire alone remains always young.

-----------------------------------

Desire is of all kinds - good, bad and feasible. The mind should only accommodate what is good and possible to achieve.

-----------------------------------

Hinduism believes in the uniqueness not just of all human life, but in the unity of all living things.

-----------------------------------

Just as the nature of water must flow down, vice drags man down and is therefore undoubtedly easy. Virtue raises a man and therefore seems rather difficult.

-----------------------------------

The conquest of anger does not mean that, although it is not obviously external, the heart is full of it. Deliberately throwing away anger, the root and the branch is a real conquest.

-----------------------------------

Idolatry is bad, not so much the worship of idols.

-----------------------------------

An idolater makes a fetish out of his idol. An idol worshipper sees God even in a stone and therefore takes the help of an idol to establish his union with God.

-----------------------------------

Every Hindu child knows that the stone of the famous temple of Benares is not Kashi Vishwanath. But he believes that the Lord of the universe resides particularly in this stone. This game of imagination is permitted and healthy.

-----------------------------------

Each edition of the Gita on a bookcase does not have the holiness I attribute to it. Logic tells me that there is no more holiness in my copy than in any other. Holiness is in my imagination. But this imagination brings wonderful concrete results. It changes people's lives.

-----------------------------------

I believe that, whether we admit it or not, we are all idol worshippers or idolaters, if the distinction I have made is not allowed. A book, a building, an image, a sculpture are certainly images in which God resides, but they are not God. The one who says they're wrong.

-----------------------------------

Confession of mistakes is like a broom that sweeps away dirt and leaves the surface cleaner than before.

-----------------------------------

A proper confession, combined with a promise never to commit sin again, when offered to a person who has the right to receive it, is the purest form of repentance.

-----------------------------------

At the moment when we repent and ask God for forgiveness for our forgetting, we are purged of our sin and a new life begins for us. True repentance is an essential prerequisite for prayer.
